Tinwald Farm Central Otago

Our farm is located in Central Otago approximately 15 km north of Cromwell and 25km south of Wanaka. The farm is flanked to the west by the Mt Pisa range and to the east by the Clutha River. We have 745 hectares of land where we farm a range of livestock and have vineyards.

Soils

Our farming focus is on the biology (the living part) of our soils. We take great care to plan our farming methods to ensure these are improving our soils and the environment they provide for the critical living soil microbiome. We regularly test and monitor the health of our soils.

Livestock

We hold around 200 pure Angus breeding cows from whom we breed Angus and Speckle Park beef. Our flock of sheep is around 2,500 and includes a smaller flock of dairy ewes for use in our sheep milking facility. Our grazing practices are based on timing animal impact to have a positive outcome on the soil. We are part of the Land to Market program aiming to regenerate and improve our farm environment year on year.

Vineyards

10 hectares of pinot noir vines were planted in 2015 and a further 10 hectares in 2018. We sell grapes to a large winery customer and from 2021 we retained a few tonnes of grapes and worked with a local winemaker to produce a limited quantity of pinot noir for family, friends and local customers.

Education

Since 2019 we have partnered with the Central Otago Polytechnic to provide a practical training site for students on their High-Country Farming course. Students spend about a year at the farm learning “hands on” about all aspects of high-country farming. We also provide work experience for students from Lincoln University on their summer placement.

From time-to-time we run short farm tours for students, farming groups or tourists keen to learn more about our activities and operations at Tinwald Farm.

Clydesdales

We have five full Clydesdale horses, two mares and three geldings. We have a large collection of historic and new carriages, wagons and harnesses for working horses. Our geldings undertake various tasks around the farm and occasionally we ride our horses for stock work.

Nursery

We have a separate area on our farm where we grow various vegetables and fruits as well as a nursery to grow our own native trees (original to the area such as kowhai) that can be planted in areas of the farm we have protected from grazing animals.

Chickens

We have a small number of free range chickens that are moved around our vineyards and farm in their own caravan on a regular basis. We produce a limited number of eggs for the farm and a few local customers.
